Online Coupons

My mother has become very savvy at finding online coupons and having the cashier scan them through her IPad. It's super futuristic and cool to see (I'm impressed with her to be honest). There's almost always a coupon online.
It's a ratgher new thing and a lot of cashiers aren't to experienced with it.
Does anyone else use coupons on their devices to get cheaper deals?

I'm not sure how many coupons are scannable from a device. I know there are store-specific coupons that work from your smartphone or iPad (Joann's fabric and Staples are two that come to mind), but online manufacturer coupons cannot be viewed until printed, and you must have the most updated form of Java in addition to a specific coupon-printing plug-in in order to print them. This is how Smartsource and Redplum (to name two) can keep track of how many coupons each household is printing. You only get two per IP address.

It is funny that you call this "futuristic." Printable coupons have been around for at least a decade (probably longer), and smartphone coupon apps have been around almost as long as the iPhone itself.

There are also several electronic rebate apps:

IBOTTA is a rebate app. Sign up with my referral (www.ibotta.com/r/mvjuvA) and you'll get an automatic $10 bonus upon sign up. Cash out using PayPal.
SavingStar is another rebate app. You link your grocery rewards cards to your account and get reimbursed for coupon values within the month. Also pays out using PayPal.

That's pretty interesting, has any cashier ever refused to scan it because it's not an *actual* coupon?

I've not tried any coupons via device yet, but for now I'm glad that I find so many coupons to use of the printed variety. Actually I'm not even sure how it would work the other way, but I know I could research it and find out quickly. :-)

Makes me wonder if all kinds of printed coupons will become obsolete sometime in the next decade?

Well using scanable coupons and even tickets is relatively common in France for certain types of purchases. I just boarded the high-speed train from Paris to Bordeaux and saw quite a lot of people with IPads and smartphones getting them scanned by the conductor's scanning device. It's actually being encouraged in many European countries because it reduces the use of paper.

I believe it will be a matter of time before supermarkets and malls adopt this practice as well, for its convenience and the fact that we are helping to protect the environment by not using paper!

I've gotten a few QR codes and was able to use them as coupons a couple of times. I never really got a kick out of it, though. I still prefer traditional coupons, as it's easier for me to visualize and calculate my transactions, but it does provide for some amusement and I still found it pretty cool that it's so advanced technology, of course.
